IRONDames & IRONDudes Put PwC Epic Tour Halton’s GranFondo 140K, Aspire 80K & Fit 50K Routes To The Test: Sept 8 2013

It was a perfect September day for the inaugural PwC Epic Tour Halton this past Sunday, September 8th, 2013. Over 2,500 cyclists took to the roads in Halton, challenging themselves on the Fit 50K, Aspire 80K and GranFondo 140K Routes respectively.

PwC Epic Tour Halton was founded and organized by Michael Merrall and Jelmer Stegink of High Performance Group of Companies. PriceWaterhouseCoopers signed a five year commitment as the Title Sponsor for this exciting GranFondo-style mass participation cycling event. Through PwC Epic Tour Halton four Regional Hospitals (Georgetown Hospital Foundation, Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation, Milton Hospital Foundation and Oakville Hospital Foundation) will receive funding via corporate donations and rider fundraising along with several other local capital campaigns.

PwC Epic Tour Halton's GranFondo 140K, Aspire 80K and Fit 50K Routes have something for every cyclist!

Our IRONDames and IRONDudes put the GranFondo 140K, Aspire 80K and Fit 50K Routes to the test. IRONDame Maris Lush was the second female to cross the finish line for the Aspire 80K challenge in a time of just over 2 hours and 10 minutes! Needless to say there was no stopping for Maris at the Food and Water Stations along the route!

For the rest of the IRONDame / IRONDude Crew it was an opportunity to ride on police-controlled traffic free roads, take in the beauty of our Halton countryside and enjoy the company of others!

When our fellow IRONDames / IRONDudes were asked to review the event the consensus was that the inaugural PwC Epic Tour Halton was a huge success and that everyone would be registering again next year!

“The GranFondo 140K Course was scenic and challenging. It had well done rest stops, along with very enthusiastic volunteers. The event had the best Expo I have seen at one of these rides.” ~ IRONDude Peter Ashmore

A big "Thanks" goes out to Mitch Kennedy of GEARS for the Roadside Tire Assist!

There were a few sections of gravel road along the Aspire 80K Route which cyclists needed to be wary of. Our cycling group incurred two flat tires but were on their way relatively quickly due to course mechanics offering a helpful hand.

The Taste of Halton Festival and Bike Expo in Kelso Quarry Park delivered on it’s promise offering up a wide range of tasty food for riders, while delivering a festival atmosphere in which cyclists could relax and celebrate their success with fellow riders and family.

The IRONDames and IRONDudes would like to thank Andrew Farmer, Director of Marketing at PwC for being such a terrific host! PwC’s five year commitment to Epic Tour Halton is sure to be a boost to cycling and healthcare in Halton Region. The Kelso Quarry Park location will certainly accommodate the growth that this Epic Event is sure to experience over the next five years!
