IRONDames’ Sneak Peek At Wellspring Halton-Peel’s New Cancer Exercise Facility

This past Wednesday evening the IRONDames and several of our sponsors and supporters had the opportunity to tour Wellspring Halton-Peel’s renovated premises and see the new Cancer Exercise Facility the IRONDames committed to build and equip by fundraising $200,000 by August 31, 2013. The newly expanded Birmingham Gilgan House (renamed in 2012 in honour of its major donors) reopened it doors on Wednesday after a year of construction, doubling the Centre’s size and parking facilities. The expansion has provided Wellspring with purpose built program areas for art therapy and children’s programming while enabling the introduction of new and expanded programs such as Nourish, in it’s new teaching kitchen and a full Money Matters Resource Centre. The expanded Cancer Exercise Facility funded by the IRONDames 2012/2013 Construction Fundraising Campaign will allow greater access to Wellspring’s innovative 30 week Cancer Exercise Program.

Marla Ashmore, President of the IRONDames had the following to say about the IRONDames Sneak Peek:

“Last night’s Sneak Peek was very special to me. I still remember the day, saying to Kim just before her passing…Let’s ice this cake we made. The cake being the “Cancer Exercise Program” and the icing being “the new Exercise Facility”. At first Kim wasn’t sure it was a good idea because she knew she wouldn’t be able to help, be alive etc. But she text me a few hours later and said what a great idea it was, go for it, and she would be proud!

I know Kim would have been proud last night. A beautiful bright room for cancer patients to exercise in and right next door to children’s area too. Kim loved kids.

I felt so proud of the IRONDames last night and what we as a group have accomplished. We still have $80,000 left to go, but I am confident we will reach our goal of $200,000 by August 31, 2013.”

The IRONDames would like to congratulate everyone involved with the design and construction of the expanded Centre as they have created an incredibly warm and inviting environment for healing and support!

The IRONDames would like to thank Christine Mieczkowski, Wellspring’s Manager of Events and her team for hosting our evening and Program Director Jodi Steele for speaking so passionately about the Cancer Exercise Program that she developed and the importance of the new Exercise Facility.

Last of all, thank you to our Journey Sponsors Neworld Cycle, RFB Construction and Sharon Carolan, our supporters and our loved ones for their unwavering support. The IRONDames are only $80,000 away from achieving our fundraising goal for Birmingham Gilgan House’s new Cancer Exercise Facility and one thing is for sure, Wednesday’s tour will be a huge motivator for us as we train for in our 2013 personal fundraising challenges in the months to come!
